Meet Eugenia: Maths Mentor and Believer in Potential
As part of our Brave Voices series at Brave Future, we celebrate the people whose presence turns learning into transformation. Today, we’re excited to introduce Eugenia Damonte, Course Manager for LWS Mathematics, whose gift for teaching goes far beyond numbers.
Eugenia is not only passionate about Maths, but about helping learners believe in themselves, discover joy in the subject, and build the self-confidence that will shape their future.
Reassuring by Nature
If Eugenia had to describe her role in one word, it would be “reassuring.”
Her approach is about making learners feel at ease, showing them that Maths doesn’t have to be intimidating, and breaking concepts down into simple, digestible steps.
“We’re now working on probability and building a comprehensive base of knowledge that learners can use to consolidate their fundamentals in Maths,” she explains. “This will allow them to progress with confidence in their future path.”
From Understanding to Explaining
One of Eugenia’s teaching goals is to empower learners to not just understand Maths, but to explain it clearly to others, a method she calls flipped learning.
She believes the true test of knowledge is the ability to explain it simply, echoing Einstein’s words: “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”
By encouraging learners to lead lessons from time to time, Eugenia helps them take ownership of their learning journey, strengthening both their confidence and their grasp of the subject.
Teaching Beyond the Subject
For Eugenia, teaching Maths is about much more than equations and formulas.
“I love Maths,” she says. “But the most fulfilling and important part of our job isn’t the subject itself, it’s helping learners build the belief that they are empowered, that they can achieve things.”
She finds this especially meaningful when working with refugee learners, who face extraordinary challenges in their daily lives. For them, excelling in Maths is not just about grades, it can open doors to greater opportunities in the future.
Creating Joy in the Classroom
Eugenia sees her impact every day in the way her learners respond.
“I see learners smiling, having a good time during our lessons, engaging, feeling free to make a joke from time to time, and working hard when asked to. From an academic point of view, they’ve improved so much in Maths, and some are still on the path, but I know for sure each one of them can make it.”
She especially loves the little gestures: a “thank you” at the end of class, a heart or clap emoji after a lesson, or the spark of competitiveness when she presents a challenge.
“You can tell they want to excel, and they’re eager to learn and shine. It’s heartwarming.”
Purpose as Motivation
What keeps Eugenia going, even on tough days, is the sense of purpose her work gives her.
“I love my job and I do it because it’s my purpose,” she reflects. “I work with purpose and with a lot of meaning. It took me a long time to figure out what my path was, and once you find it and turn it into your profession, it doesn’t even feel like a job.”
Beyond Numbers
Outside of teaching, Eugenia embraces a life of simplicity and personal growth.
“I love travelling on the road, when you have space for less, there’s only room for what really matters. It connects me to the simplicity of what life should be. I also meditate a lot and work with energies, and I’m always very interested in my own and other people’s personal growth.”
This sense of balance and introspection is woven into her teaching, reminding her learners that education is not just about knowledge, but about self-discovery and resilience.
Why Her Story Matters
At Brave Future, Eugenia embodies what it means to be a mentor: not just teaching a subject, but building confidence, nurturing joy, and creating safe spaces where learners feel empowered.
Through her patience, clarity, and encouragement, she’s shaping more than problem-solvers, she’s shaping futures.
